Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit law firm that provides free, high-quality civil legal assistance to people living in poverty, seeks a Director of Human Resources. The Director of Human Resources will plan, lead, develop, coordinate, and implement policies, processes, training, and initiatives to support the human resource strategies and compliance for ABLE and its sister organization, Legal Aid of Western Ohio, Inc. This position is located at ABLE’s headquarters in Toledo, Ohio and supports seven offices in Western Ohio.

Applicants must have a BA/BS in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field, Master’s or Law degree preferred, and; a minimum of 5 years of experience in human resource management or equivalent experience. SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP is preferred.

Candidates must also have strong supervisory and leadership skills; knowledge of employment-related laws and regulations; strong analytical and problem-solving skills; proficiency with or the ability to quickly learn the organization’s HRIS and payroll systems; ability to organize and prioritize work, plan and problem-solve, and meet deadlines.

Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit regional law firm that provides high-quality legal assistance to low-income persons and groups in western Ohio, seeks a dynamic, creative, hardworking ombudsman for its Toledo office.


Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE), a non-profit law firm that provides free, high-quality legal assistance in civil matters to low-income individuals and groups in northwest Ohio, seeks an Ombudsman for its Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program. The Ombudsman will receive, investigate, and work to resolve complaints filed on behalf of consumers of long-term care services, primarily in nursing homes in the 7-county service area of Lima Ohio, Region 3 . The Ombudsman will also support our volunteer program, provide community education, and systemic advocacy related to long-term care. Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree in social work, social services, a health-related field, or any other related field. Commensurate experience may be considered in lieu of Bachelor’s Degree. Candidates must possess excellent communication and human relations skills, and a demonstrated commitment to advocacy on behalf of consumers of long-term care services. Candidates must have the combined qualities of excellent interpersonal and administrative skills. Computer proficiency required. Daily travel in West Central Ohio required. (LAWO) are currently accepting applications from first- and second-year law students for 2021 summer associate positions in their Agricultural Worker and Immigrant Rights Practice Group. The positions are located in the Dayton, Findlay, and Toledo offices.

AGRICULTURAL WORKER AND IMMIGRANT RIGHTS PRACTICE GROUP

The Agricultural Worker and Immigrant Rights Practice Group offers legal services to thousands of agricultural workers and other immigrants throughout Ohio. The practice group maintains a diverse immigration practice, representing individuals in removal proceedings in the Cleveland Immigration Court and in applications for immigration benefits before U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Clients seek various forms of immigration relief, including asylum, cancellation of removal, Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, special immigrant juvenile status, visas for victims of crime and domestic violence, adjustment of status, naturalization, and family-based visas.

The AIR practice group also runs a summer outreach program to visit licensed agricultural worker camps throughout Ohio in order to provide migrant workers with information about their legal rights and offer representation in matters such as violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act and other federal and state labor protective statutes. We also represent immigrant workers who face issues regarding immigration status, civil rights violations, ethnic profiling by law enforcement, and unequal access to education. Many of our cases involve large-scale impact litigation aimed at changing conditions for large groups of immigrants.

Primary responsibilities of summer associates include outreach to labor camps, investigation, client interviewing, and research and writing. Associates must demonstrate commitment to equal justice for the poor and be capable of assuming responsibility for representing clients under the supervision of an attorney. While highly demanding, work in the program is inspiring and rewarding.

Ability to relate well to immigrant clients is essential. Students should be prepared to participate in a summer associate orientation in Toledo on May 17, 2021, followed by an intensive migrant farmworker training program later that month. Candidates must demonstrate a commitment to equal justice as well as excellent written and oral communication skills. Access to an automobile throughout the summer is necessary. Work hours may vary. The ability to communicate in Spanish is required.

Associate positions are unpaid. Applicants are encouraged to seek scholarships or fellowships through their law school, as well as to apply for grants through sources such as the Federal Work-Study Program or Equal Justice Works Immigration Summer Legal Corps. Alternatively, applicants may seek credit from their law school externship program. Assistance with parking fees and program related travel is available.

ABLE and LAWO attorneys provide legal assistance in a wide range of civil areas. ABLE and LAWO represent victims of domestic violence, tenants facing eviction, homeowners in foreclosure, individuals seeking public benefits and appropriate healthcare, and students who lack appropriate educational opportunities. ABLE and LAWO attorneys handle individual cases and large-scale litigation in state and federal courts, and advocate on policy issues.

These positions provide valuable practical experience to students seeking careers in public interest law. In addition to traditional research and writing assignments, each Associate will receive training on the basics of poverty law and gain additional knowledge of legal practice through court observation and meetings with local attorneys and judges. Experienced attorneys will mentor Associates on how to excel in a public interest law career.
